Man in court over child rape claim

By Crown Court Reporter in Law

A MAN from Newton Abbot has appeared at Exeter Crown Court accused of sexually abusing two children, writes a crown court correspondent.

Damien Treavartha, aged 34, was not required to enter a plea when he appeared before Judge Geoffrey Mercer, QC, by video link from Bristol prison.

The judge adjourned the case for a month, during which police will continue to carry out further inquiries and Treavartha will have a chance to give instructions to his lawyers.

Mr Nicolas Gerasimidis, prosecuting, said the contents of a phone are being examined and it is possible Treavartha may be interviewed about further alleged offences.

Treavartha, of Bowden Hill, Newton Abbot, is currently facing one charge of rape and one of sexual assault, which relate to two complainants, aged nine and ten.

He was remanded in custody until March 2. No application was made for bail.
