POLICE have praised the public after a man was arrested in the wake of suspicious behaviour near a Newton Abbot primary school.

Officers voiced their thanks after detaining a young man in Kingskerswell Road yesterday afternoon.

Members of the public sprang into action after spotting suspicious behaviour in the vicinity of Decoy Primary School and the nearby park at 3.30pm.

They managed to hold on to a suspect while officers arrived at the scene to take the man away for questioning.

The incident is understood to be related to earlier warnings from police about suspicious behaviour in the neighbourhood.

A police spokesman thanked the public for their vigilance in the wake of their

call for people to be on their guard.

He said officers would continue to maintain patrols in the local area.

They want anyone seeing unusual behaviour locally to report it to police on 101. In emergencies they should ring 999.

Police confirmed this afternoon that 24-year-old Darren Breen, of no fixed address, had been charged with a public order matter. He is due to appear before Torbay magistrates on March 1.
