A COMMUNITY-spirited Newton Abbot couple have taken matters into their own hands and given a dilapidated bench a new lease of life.
Resurfacing works had taken place in the Wolborough Hill area of the town and workmen removed a bench – once enjoyed by many – but didn’t put it back.
They said it couldn’t be re-installed because there was no money to repair or replace it.
Penny Harries knew how much people enjoyed sitting on it and decided to ‘volunteer’ her husband to spruce it up.
After restoring the bench to its former glory, the duo had to wait three months for council workmen to install it.
A delighted Penny said: ‘It is good to see people back sitting on it again, and that it is one of the old, original, attractive benches is even better.’
