AN INQUIRY is being launched after a binman was injured in an accident with his recycling vehicle in Shaldon.

The casualty, who has not been named, was flown by air ambulance to Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital for treatment to chest injuries.

It’s understood he suffered crush injuries after becoming trapped between the vehicle and a wall in Oak Tree Grove yesterday.

The injured crewman was kept in hospital overnight.

The Health and Safety Executive has been notified of the incident and is expected to investigate the circumstances.

A spokesman for Teignbridge Council said: ‘We can confirm that there was an incident in Shaldon yesterday involving a vehicle and a member of the recycling crew.

‘As a precautionary measure the casualty was taken to hospital and kept in overnight for observations. We are currently investigating the cause of this accident and would like to wish the crew member a speedy recovery.’

The spokesman added: ‘All waste and recycling staff are required to complete a full induction training programme and appropriate safety procedures are put in place.’
