Two girls from Newton Abbot Water Polo Club – Jade Stickland (left) and Heather Tomlinson – played their part in helping the South West U18 team claimm gold at the ASA Inter Regional Championships, held in Blackpool.

The South West team romped through the group stages, winning their matches 9-2, 13-4, 15-1, 12-1, 18-4 to face favourites Northwest Lightning in the final.

The final saw some fine defensive and attacking play from both teams, along with superb goal keeping. The match ended in a 2-2 draw, resulting in a penalty shoot-out.

Five players from each team lined up to shoot, but only four South West girls needed to take their shot as each tore into the net, unlike the Northwest Lightnings, whose second and third efforts were saved by the South West keeper, with Tomlinson having the honour of firing home the winning penalty.
