Comic’s backing for Ashburton arts centre

By Paul James in Local People

TOP comedian and homespun Dartmoor talent Josh Widdicombe has given his backing to an ambitious project to establish a community arts centre in Ashburton.

The popular funny man has thrown his support behind the town’s DIY plan to run a cultural hub in the town’s classic early Victorian methodist church in East Street.

His comments came as the newly-formed charity company behind the venture – Ashburton Arts – revealed that the town is well on its way to securing the funds needed to buy the Grade II listed building.

So far pledges of more than £60,000 have been promised with sights firmly set on achieving the asking price of £150,000.

One of the first donations received for the charitable company came from Mary Witt, 88, who attended Sunday School at the church in the 1930s. Read the story in this week’s paper, out today.
