Four teams were fielded by the Maverick Runners at the annual Erme Valley Relays, on Friday evening, and their ladies beat the best in the west in their age group to win the Newton Abbot club’s first ever team prize.
With teams fielded by both age and sex, it was in the female vet 35 age group that the Maverick fleet-footed four cleaned up. The team comprising Claire McKenna, Linda Dabbs, Hania Lee and Lorna Spayne beat all others in that age category to take a well-earned first place.
The popular relay event is tackled by teams of four runners, with each runner having to complete a 2.5-mile loop.
Starting from Ivybridge Rugby Club, the course takes each runner over a hilly and testing route of quiet country lanes, before returning to the rugby club, where they hand over to their team-mate to then take their turn.
Organised by the Erme Valley Harriers, the event attracts local runners of all abilities and levels, with the chance to run as part of a team always providing an enjoyable attraction.
The relays are also keenly fought by the South West’s top runners, so it’s always an opportunity for any club to test themselves against the best local talent.
The Mavericks acquitted themselves admirably, with all four teams mixing it well with the other 120 teams that were entered on the night.
Despite being a small club, the Mavericks fielded a ladies’ team, two men’s teams and a mixed team. The Maverick Runners’ team were made up of individual lap times):
