The Faces - The Cars - The News

Chance to view some American classic autos

Up to 60 classic and American cars are expected to turn out on Sunday for the seventh such annual gathering at the Coast View Holiday Park, Shaldon, writes Nigel Canham.
The organiser and camp owner, Malcolm Collett, has a love of the old and unusual and drives a Ford Econoline day van, the 7.3 litre engine – which perhaps proves that our transatlantic friends do actually understand the use of irony in humour.
The event is being hosted by the American Auto Club but will feature displays from the Torbay Mini Group and others, as well as trade stands, children’s entertainment and a performance from the Riviera Twirl Stars baton troupe.
A unique race, open to any teams of three who care to give it a go, will be the
wheelie bin challenge in which one person will ride inside while pulled along a course by two others.
Other opportunities for audience participation will come in the form of a driving challenge in a car provided for the purpose and a crate-stacking competition.
‘It’s an event that’s growing every year. We just do it because we love old and American cars,’ said Malcolm.
The gates are due to open at 10am and entry is free. Funds will be raised for the Children’s Hospice South West through the sale of
programmes.
