The next £1m phase of Morrison's development to provide commercial units
EMPLOYMENT units to boost jobs in the Teignmouth area will be the next phase of the multi-million pound Morrrisons development in the town.
Work on building the supermarket and fuel station at Broadmeadow is now well underway, and Teignbridge executive on Tuesday will be asked to greenlight the construction of small, flexible commercial units for mixed use, meeting rooms and office space.
The £1-million phase is aimed at 'attracting, encouraging and assisting new, small and expanding local businesses.' It is hoped that about 65 new jobs will be created, and there will also be training and apprenticeship schemes , run in conjunction with South Devon College.
The land is owned by Teignbridge, and as part of the deal, Morrisons will prepare the site and lay on services. The authority will then lease out the units at reasonable rents.
The executive now has to decide on several options involving the funding and layout and design of the scheme, which are set out in a report.
The committee is recommended to seek t he overall approval of the project by the full council; approval of the development budget in principle ; funding the enabling works, i.e. design works and installation of the piles if required , and submission and approval in principle of the planning application.
The complex, including the reinstatement of contaminated sports pitches , is due to be completed by December, when a £9-milllion 'windfall' will be paid to Teignbridge. Morrisons are currently recruiting managers and staff for the new store.
