FIREFIGHTERS have released these dramatic pictures of the lorry fire that shut the A38 this afternoon, Tuesday.

Atone point traffic was stationary on westbound carriageway back as far as Splatford Split with Highways currently diverting traffic onto the A380.

On their Facebook page Newton Abbot Firefighters have released these pictures and said: 'Just before 1300 this afternoon, crews from Newton Abbot fire station were mobilised to reports of a lorry fire on the A38 near Exeter racecourse.

'Upon arrival, smoke and flames were issuing from the cab of the lorry, with the entire tractor unit engulfed in flames.

'The quick work from the first attending appliances saw them quickly bring the flames under control.

'The crews tackled the fire wearing BA (Breathing Apparatus), and using main attack jets.

'Due to the ferocity of the fire however, the heat had managed to transfer through the shipping container trailer and set alight the contents of the load within.

'When crews gained access to the rear of the lorry, they were met with boxes stacked from floor to ceiling throughout the entire trailer, with thick smoke issuing. In order to fully extinguish the fire, multiple BA crews were forced to climb through the vehicle in order to reach the fast developing fire.

'By the end of the incident, it was estimated that the combined efforts of the crews saw us move close to a 1,000 parasol bases, weighing in at around 25 kg each.

'During this incident the EPU (Environmental Protection Unit), also from Newton Abbot, was mobilised.

'The primary task of the EPU crew was to lay down booms as well as oil absorbent pads and powders in order to contain as much fuel and fire water run-off as possible.

'An extensive incident that was brought to a relatively quick conclusion due to the hard working efforts of all present.'

Fire Control reports: ' The 44 tonne articulated lorry was severely damaged by fire. The tractor unit was 90% damaged by fire and the trailer unit 20% damaged by fire and heat.

'The burnt contents have been removed and a salvage team still in attendance removing the goods.'

Fire crews also attended from Bovey Tracey, Ashburton, Danes Castle and Middlemoor.
