ARSONISTS are reckoned to have torched a car in Chudleigh in the early hours of this morning.
The small hatchback was well alight by the time a fire crew from Newton Abbot reached the scene near the Lears Lane bridge on the outskirts of the town at 5am.
Several residents were alerted after hearing ‘popping and banging’ noises. They then looked out and saw red glows in the darkness which prompted their string of 999 calls.
Police were notified by the fire service that the incident was ‘deemed to be deliberate.’
Firefighters using breathing gear used two hosereel jets to knock out the flames.
The car, hard to identify as a burnt-out shell, was destroyed.
