CRUNCH...a man was taken to hospital after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest at the wheel of his car in Newton Abbot yesterday (Thursday,October 13).
Police and paramedics dealt with the incident which involved the slowly moving Ford Focus (pictured) demolishing a low wall and mounting a flower bed during the driver’s seizure just after 4pm.
The casualty, aged 60 and from Buckfastleigh, was rushed to Torbay Hospital for a check-up. He was given CPR treatment at the scene by the ambulance crew who responded to the 999 call at 4.10pm.
The accident happened at the Queen Street junction with The Avenue near the war memorial. A witness at the scene said: ‘It looks like the person driving was taken ill at the wheel. The car ended up on the flower bed just outside the Naz Indian restaurant.’
The area was clear and free-flowing by 5.40pm. Devon’s air ambulance was called out, but its services were not needed.
