There were traffic delays yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) as a car caught fire on the A383 in Newton Abbot near the Tesco petrol station roundabout.

Traffic was diverted as fire crews dealt with the blaze after getting the callout at 12.38pm.

A spokesperson for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘Fire control were called to reports of a car on fire at the above location. Fire control sent one fire engine from Newton Abbot.

‘Once the crew got in attendance the officer in charge confirmed one vehicle well alight on the public highway.

‘The crew extinguished the fire with the use of two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet, one safety jet and two dry powder extinguishers.’

‘The fire has now been extinguished and area has been made safe. The cause of this fire is believed to be accidental.’
