AN OUT-OF-CONTROL bonfire was extinguished by Newton Abbot firefighters over the weekend.

The blaze at Meadowside, a day after the Guy Fawkes celebrations, had no connection with any homespun fireworks display.

The Sunday drama prompted a 999 call to the local brigade after the flames crept too near a property.

Firefighters gave safety advice to those who lit the fire to burn rubbish.
