A MAN has died in a road smash on the A38 near Drumbridges early today.
The driver 29, and from Gloucestershire, died shortly after his black Mercedes car collided with a parked lorry in a lay-by just before 3am.
Police and paramedics found the injured driver unconscious – but shortly afterwards he was declared dead by a doctor at the scene.
Next of kin were being informed, a police spokesman said, after the tragedy which did not involve any other vehicles.
The accident happened at about 2.50am on the Exeter-bound carriageway of the Devon Expressway.
A police spokesman said: ‘It appears a car has hit a parked lorry and left the road and gone into a hedge.’
He added: ‘Police and ambulance went to the scene where the driver was found unconscious.
‘A doctor shortly after declared the driver deceased. He was a male aged in his late 20s. His next of kin are being informed.’
Police set up a a road closure from Goodstone junction and put diversions in place.
By 7.45 am the road was partially opened.
Police want to hear from anyone who may have seen the incident.
