FIREFIGHTERS extinguished a kitchen blaze at a Newton Abbot town centre pub over the weekend.

Two crews - one from the town and the other from Torquay – used two jets and a dry powder extinguisher to tackle the deep fat fryer drama at Queen Street’s Wetherspoons inn, the Richard Hopkins.

A fire spokesman said the damage was confined to the deep fat fryer.

Two positive pressure fans were used to clear the smoke from the premises after the alarm was raised at 12.45pm on Saturday.
