FIREFIGHTERS from Dawlish responded to reports of a fire in the open at Dawlish Warren Nature Reserve tonight (Wednesday, February 25).

The initial callout was for just the pump appliance but as the location was given as near the Boathouse the officer in charge requested the station’s Emergency Response Unit to attend for easy access under the railway bridge.

On arrival the ERU located the fire and the Dawlish appliance crossed the main railway line using the crossing procedure with Network Rail to provide water to extinguish the fire.

The fire turned out to be a controlled burn which had been taped off but left unattended. High winds blowing over the embers had re-ignited then and meant they were were still extremely hot with the potential to spread to nearby trees.

The crew used beaters, spades and a hose reel jet from the pump to extinguish the embers plus a thermal imaging camera to check for fire spread.
