A FIRE crew from Newton Abbot were called in to rescue a child who had trapped his finger in a metal grate in Buckfastleigh this afternoon.

They rushed to Church Hill just after 2pm to help colleagues in the town who were not equipped with the specialist ring-cutting gear to free the youngster.

Paramedics stood down once it was established the casualty did not require their services.

The child, who has not been named, was unhurt.
