A SAW and small tools were used by firefighters to deal with a smouldering beam within a wood burner fireplace at a renovated terraced property in Newton Abbot last night.

They were called to Halcyon Road to deal with the incident just before 8pm.

A six-inch section of an old beam was sawn away after it caught alight from the heat of the wood-burner’s metal plate.

Duty of care was left with the occupants of the property.
