The sentence of a couple who peddled heroin in South Devon has been delayed so they can be assessed for drug rehabilitation treatment.

James Martin and Kelly Woodward were caught with drugs and £7,930 when police raided their home near Newton Abbot in December 2015.

Judge Geoffrey Mercer, QC adjourned both sentences for four weeks to allow addiction workers at Shrublands in Torquay to assess the couple.

Martin, aged 44, and Woodward, aged 33, both of Lower Cannon Road, Heathfield, Newton Abbot, have admitted being concerned in the supply of class A drugs and the possession of criminal property.

Woodward has also admitted possession of heroin with intent to supply on December 23, 2015.

A further case against Martin of simple possession of six grams heroin in December 2016 has now been dealt with by magistrates in Torquay with a £440 fine.

Mr James Hasslacher, defending, said a probation report has found both are desperate to rid themselves of their addictions and want to access help.

He said Woodward had been an addict for some time but kept it secret from Martin until she ran up drug debts of £13,000 and had dealers at the door demanding money.

He said Martin helped her deal to try to pay off the debt by bagging up drugs. The money seized was what they were saving to pay off the debt. Martin then began using heroin as well, leading to him losing his job as an asphalter.

The judge told the couple he was not making any promises and told them: ’Heroin is dominating your lives at the moment’.

Martin replied: ’It has destroyed us.’
