ATTEND an organised event and leave the handling of the fireworks to the professionals: that’s the line from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Services regarding upcoming Guy Fawkes celebratons.

In a bid to ease pressure on the emergency services, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Services are urging members of the public to forego hosting an at-home bonfire and firework display; instead it is encouraged that people attend an organised event overseen by trained personnel who can best conduct a fireworks display and bonfire without incident.

Speaking about this year’s Guy Fawkes celebrations, Ros Clarke, Fire Prevention Officer, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘Bonfire night and the days surrounding it are notoriously busy for the Fire and Rescue service’

‘Attending bonfires can have a knock-on effect on the avaliability of our fire appliances and can cost us life-saving minutes in getting to house fires or other operational incidents’

‘We need our firefighters for real emergencies - by attending an offical display you can help ensure that our resources aren’t delayed for someone who really needs our assistance.’

With that being said however some people may, for whatever reason, choose to celebrate Guy Fawkes day at home.

In this event it would be wise to; read up on the safety advice provided, let neighbours know and lastly to let the fire service know also: visit dsfire.gov.uk for more information.
