TARA Mackie is writing a book about artist Frank Egginton.
Born in 1908, Frank spent his early years in Newton Abbot and Teignmouth, attending Newton Abbot Secondary School before moving on to Newton Abbot Art College alongside siblings Lucy and Elizabeth.
Frank’s father, Wycliffe Egginton, was himself a famous Devon-based painter who was, and continues to be, renowned for his stunning watercolour landscapes of the British Countryside.
Wycliffe played a key role in the development of his son’s artistic life being father, mentor and also serving as Headmaster of Newton Abbot Art College during his son’s stint at the school although this is not entirely clear.
In the 1930s Wycliffe sent Frank to Ireland to complete a commission for a businessman and the rest, as they say, is history.
Frank quickly became enamoured with the landscape of Ireland and as such, made the country his home. He would reside in Ireland until his death in April of 1990.
Tara’s research is still ongoing and you can help.
