A MAN has been rescued after falling more than 50ft down a disused quarry in Torbryan this morning.

All three emergency services, involving some 30 personnel, were called to Orley Common after the climbing accident alarm was raised just before 11am.

A police spokesman said it appeared the casualty had been conscious and breathing at the site of his tumble.

The man was with two other climbers when the accident happened.

He was comforted at the scene by his fellow climbers while police, fire and ambulance teams rushed to the location at Broadway Farm, Wellbarn Cross.

The man was later flown by Devon’s air ambulance for treatment at Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital.

His two climbing mates were giving details to police at the scene.

Two fire crews from Newton Abbot were in attendance, together with the hydraulic platform team from Torquay and the specialist rescue unit from Exeter.

An ambulance and rapid response vehicle were also at the incident which was still ongoing at noon.
