HUNDREDS of train passengers were caught up in lengthy delays after an apparent suicide on the rail line between Newton Abbot and Exeter during Monday afternoon’s rush-hour.

A 60-year-old man, whose details are not yet known, died at the scene not far from the Double Locks pub just outside Exeter.

Train services were delayed for several hours while the emergency services dealt with the tragic incident.

Replacement bus services were run to accommodate those stranded by the incident which happened at 5pm.

One commuter said: ‘We were not told what had happened – just that there were delays. We had a long wait.’

Police, paramedics and an air ambulance crew attended the scene.

The matter has been reported to HM Coroner with an inquest expected to open soon to take formal evidence of identity.

A spokesman for British Transport Police confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances. He added that the man involved died at the scene.
