A MAN was found dead in an alleyway off Newton Abbot’s Torquay Road over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Police and paramedics were called to a service lane between Gloucester Road and Beaumont Road early on Saturday morning after a man was found slumped on the ground.

Efforts to revive him were not successful – and he was declared dead at the scene.

Police later confirmed the dead man, who has not been named, was in his 60s.

Local residents were shocked by the death on their doorstep.

One said paramedics worked for some time in the rain in a desperate effort to save the man.

Another said: ‘It’s very sad. We had seen a man about the same age wandering in the same East Street area over the last few days. I imagine it must have been him him.’

Police said they responded to a ‘concern for welfare’ call at 8.30am.

‘A man in his 60s was located deceased at the scene. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file has been prepared for the coroner,’ said a spokeswoman.
