A MOTORCYCLIST from Kingsteignton suffered serious multiple injuries in a crash in Kingskerswell late yesterday afternoon.
The rider, in his 30s, is thought to have suffered life-changing injuries in collision with a car on the Newton Road junction with Coles Lane just before 6pm.
He was flown by Devon Air Ambulance to Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital for treatment.
Road closures were set up as the emergency services dealt with the incident with highways staff called in to clear oil and debris from the carriageway.
A police spokesman confirmed: ‘We were called by ambulance to reports of a collision involving a car and a motorbike at around 5.45pm on the Newton Road at Kingskerswell.’
The spokesman added: ‘A local man in his 30s sustained multiple serious injuries and was taken by air ambulance to Derriford.’
One witness at the scene said today: ‘The motorcyclist had been travelling through Kingskerswell along the Newton Road towards Newton Abbot.
‘I saw him lying on his back in the Torquay-bound lane about a minute after the collision. A woman was tending to him as they waited for an ambulance to arrive.
‘The car, which was pointing into Park Road, was damaged to its nearside and was half in and half out of the junction.’
He added: ‘It looked nasty. I only hope the motorcyclist and driver of the car are not too badly injured.’
The witness, from Newton Abbot, was on a bus heading towards the town.
He explained: ‘The bike rider had passed us when we pulled into a bus stop about half-a-mile earlier, some two or three stops back. He was travelling at the normal speed for the road.
'The bus could not stop at the accident scene because it would have completely blocked the road, but several people were already there.'
