A MAN in his 80s was found dead at the scene of a house fire in Newton Abbot yesterday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to a terraced property in King Street just before 4pm.
Three fire crews responded to the 999 shout to find the fire - confined to a living room - had burnt itself out.
The body of the man, who is thought to have lived alone at the property and was in receipt of care, was found in the room which suffered heat and smoke damage.
Two crews from Newton Abbot and one from Torquay attended the incident.
South Devon coroner Ian Arrow has been informed of the tragedy.
An inquest is expected to open later this week or early next week.
A police spokesman said the death was not being treated as suspicious.
Inquiries into the exact cause of the fire are still being pursued.
A police spokesman said this morning: ‘We were alerted at 3.50pm on Monday to a fire affecting a property on King Street.
‘One person has died in the fire. Efforts to locate next of kin continue.’
He added: ‘Police are not currently treating this fire as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.’
