AN SUSPECT package through the post sent emergency services rushing to a business address in Abbotskerswell this afternoon .
Police called in firefighters from Newton Abbot to help identify the iffy and whiffy contents of the padded envelope just after midday.
Firefighters donned respiratory protection gear to examine the mystery substance which smelled strongly of ammonia.
It was decided that the straw-like material should be re-sealed and taken away for supervised incineration.
It’s not thought the package contained any postmarks which might have given a clue about where it came from.
A pump from Newton Abbot attended together with the town-based Environment Protection Unit and a specialist Hazardous Materials Officer.
A photo-analysation detector was used to help put a name to the dodgy contents – but all to no avail.
It’s thought the scrutinised material was something akin to the scrapings from a well-used and neglected rabbit hutch.
Precautionary advice was offered to the perplexed recipients of the ‘unidentifiable substance.’
