A former prison inmate has admitted encouraging his teenaged girlfriend to smuggle drugs into Channings Wood jail in South Devon.

Joe Garland, aged 30, Whitewells Road, Bath, admitted two counts of inciting a person to possess drugs with intent to supply when he appeared at Exeter Crown Court.

He asked 19-year-old Chelsea Bennett to supply the drugs to Channings Wood Prison, near Newton Abbot, between July 19 and 22 last year.

The two charges relate to 21.85 grams of the class A drug crack cocaine and 25.85 grams of the class B drug cannabis.

Bennett, of Chubb Close, Bristol, has admitted being concerned in the supply of both drugs and both will be sentenced together later this month.

She was arrested after a drugs sniffer dog alerted staff to her as she was going through visitor’s reception at the prison, where she was due to visit Garland.

Mr Giles Nelson, for Garland, said he is currently remanded in custody on other matters in Bristol but is keen for these offences to be dealt with as soon as possible.
