A MAN is fighting for his life in hospital after a road smash in Newton Abbot on Tuesday night.

The casualty, in his 30s, is said to have suffered life-threatening injuries in the collision on the Exeter Road just outside the town.

He was rushed by ambulance to Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital after being released from the wreckage of his car by firefighters using hydraulic cutting gear.

Another adult and a child were also injured in the accident which happened just before 10.30pm near the Whitehill Garage.

The child was taken by ambulance to Torbay Hospital. The second adult, who like the child escaped with minor injuries, did not need hospital treatment.

Three ambulances attended the scene together a rapid response car. Two fire crews from Newton Abbot and Torquay also responded.

Highways workers were called to clear debris from the road.

The vehicles involved were from Bristol and Redruth.
