FIREFIGHTERS from Newton Abbot were involved in an incident involving a fishing vessel in Brixham.
The crew’s environmental protection unit were called in following reports of a fishing boat on fire at sea.
Before their arrival on scene, the coastguard had escorted the vessel alongside after the crew reported a fire in the engine room.
The fire had been dealt with by the boat’s onboard suppression systems.
However, when firefighters went to inspect the engine room, high levels of carbon monoxide were being monitored by detection equipment.
On arrival, the incident commander from Brixham asked the Newton Abbot crew to gauge a more accurate reading of the gas levels and locate the source.
A team of two wearing breathing apparatus went into the engine compartment to investigate.
They monitored the gas levels and used natural ventilation until it was decided the levels were no longer harmful.
