A NIGERIAN has been warned he faces a long jail sentence after being found guilty of having sex with a 14-year-old girl.

Kingsley Omiogate claimed he had never been alone with the girl but was trapped by social network messages which he sent to the girl which made it clear they had sex on two different occasions.

The girl’s horrified mother called the police after finding the online conversation and the teenager told officers she had had consensual sex with Omiogate.

Omiogate, aged 40, of Newton Abbot, denied two counts of sexual activity with a child but was found guilty by a jury at Exeter Crown Court.

He was remanded in custody by Recorder Mr Ignatius Hughes, QC, to await sentence in three weeks when a probation report is available.

He told him: ’You have been convicted of two serious sexual offences against a child. It is inevitable you will go to prison for a number of years.

’I am prepared to order a pre-sentence report to inform me better about the length of the sentence. I will remand you in custody because bail would create a potentially irresistible temptation fail to attend. That is not a risk I am prepared to take.’

During a four-day trial the prosecution told the jury that the girl, who was 14 at the time, did not tell anyone about her contact with Omiogate until after her mother confronted her over the social network messages.

She then made a video-recorded police interview in which she said she had sex with him on two occasions in 2014.

Mr Sean Brunton, prosecuting, said: ’The girl’s mother had reason to look at her daughter’s mobile phone and saw she was involved in wholly inappropriate conversations with men in different countries.

’There seem to have been some photographs of herself in some of them. She then looked at her network account and discovered with growing horror there were conversations with this defendant.

’They appeared to be about the fact they had had sex. She challenged her daughter and was eventually told that she and this defendant had sex on two occasions in July and August 2014.’

Omiogate said he had never been alone with the girl and the messages arose from a misunderstanding.
