A VAN driver suffered ‘serious injuries’ after crashing into a tree on St Marychurch Road in Newton Abbot this morning (Friday).
Police responded to the 999 shout at 3.30am and found a severely damaged vehicle, but no driver.
A helicopter and ground units joined forces to search for the driver because they had concerns for his welfare.
Officers were alerted at 4.50am that the man had been taken to Torbay Hospital by family members.
He was then taken on to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, where he is being treated for serious chest and head injuries.
St Marychurch Road was still sealed off by emergency services at 9.30am.
