FIREFIGHTERS found a sofa ablaze as they tackled a fire that spread to two Newton Abbot homes this afternoon Thursday).

Crews from Newton Abbot and a supporting officer were initially sent following a report of a fire within a property at Howard’s Way, Newton Abbot.

A spokesperson for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: ‘After receiving further calls a fire engine from Torquay was also mobilised. On arrival crews confirmed one sofa on fire within the property. 

‘A further fire engine was requested which also attended from Torquay and an aerial ladder platform from Danes Castle.

‘Due to the escalation of the fire a further two fire engines, special appliances and supporting officers attended this incident.  

‘Fire in two attached domestic properties consisting of two floors measuring approximately 10m x 10m.  Fire in ground floor, first floor and roof space. 

‘Crews using six breathing apparatus, three hose reel jets, one safety jet, small tools and the aerial ladder platform.

‘Further details will follow.’
