A MAN is thought to have shot himself dead at an address in Chudleigh Knighton over the weekend.

Police were called to an address in the Harvey’s Close area of the village just before 6.30pm on Sunday when a single gunshot was heard.

Police have confirmed they are not treating the fatal incident as suspicious.

The man, whose family have been notified, has been named locally as Paul Chalmers.

A police spokesman said: ‘We are not looking for anyone in connection with this incident. No other people are involved.’

The Exeter coroner has been informed of the matter which is being seen as a tragic domestic incident.

Police were alerted at 6.20pm after someone outside the man’s property heard a single gunshot.

Police and paramedics - and later undertakers - were called to the scene where the man, who has not been officially named, was pronounced dead.

The Devon Air Ambulance was also called out - but the crew’s services were not required.

Police confirmed that a firearm was recovered from the property.

An inquest, detailing the circumstances of the tragedy, is expected to open later this week.

A full inquest will be held in Exeter at a later date.
