A SPECIAL poppy is being raffled in Ashburton this week to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal.

The ceramic flower was one of 888,246 planted around the Tower of London in 2014 to mark the 100th anniversary of the first full day of the UK’s involvement in the First World War.

The figure represented the British military fatalities during the conflict.

Each creation was sold off after the amazing display was dismantled with six service charities benefiting from the massive sum raised.

Now one of these famous floral fixtures is the subject of a raffle at the Poppy Ball in Ashburton town hall this Friday.

So far, £800 has been raised – an impressive sum which has not surprised town hall secretary Karen Turner (pictured).

‘People have been so generous,’ she said.

Tickets are £1 each. Anyone interested in a shot at acquiring the treasure can contact Karen at the town hall.
