FROM the early hours of Saturday morning hundreds of music lovers began amassing outside Newton Abbot’s premier record store, eagerly awaiting its opening... but why?
Because it was Record Store Day of course!
This is the day for those with a deep felt appreciation for all things vinyl to come together and celebrate the very best of the UK’s independent record stores - Newton Abbot’s very own Phoenix Sound among them, naturally.
And while people came from far and wide, and for every 20th century boy and girl there were as many born post the year 2000, each had one thing in common: they would have surely waited all day and all of the night to get their hands on the special vinyl releases which lay inside the store.
Owners Roger Cox and Masha Miles, as well as the ever enthusiastic team at Phoenix Sound, unlocked the doors at 8am sharp - Record Store Day at Phoneix Sound was offically underway.
Live music and a DJ set added to the already stellar atomsphere, in addition to the main draw: the specially printed records.
Via their Facebook page, Roger and Marsha said: ‘Thanks to everyone who joined the party yesterday for our first RSD since taking over the store.
‘It was an awesome atmosphere.’
Record Store Day is the one day of the year when more than 260 independent record shops all across the UK come together to celebrate their unique culture.
Special vinyl releases are made exclusively for the day and many shops and cities host artist performances and events to mark the occasion.
