ONE of Teignmouth's famous heroes has been celebrated at the town's museum.

The daring exploits of Admiral Sir Edward Pellew, a contemporary of Nelson who fought the French all his life at sea and was the inspiration for the Hornblower novels, were recalled on Saturday.

The day began with musketmen in naval uniform from the Society of George III, who showed visitors their armaments. There was a fascinating talk by Stephen Taylor, who has just published a new biography of Pellew, entitled Commander, followed by a toast to the admiral and a display of musketry on the museum terrace.
