CONSERVATIVE candidate Alison Hernandez has been voted in as Devon and Cornwall’s Police and Crime Commissioner.

She claimed the seat with 91,036 votes with her Labour rival Gareth Derrick on 87,242 voted after both went through to a second round.

There was a turnout of 22.8%, up from 15% in the election of November 2012.

Alison will take over from Tony Hogg on May 12 and her term of office will last four years.

Other candidates who were in the running included Liberal Democrat Richard Younger-Ross who picked up 35,154 votes and UKIP’s Jonathan Smith who received 49,659 votes.
