STRONG teams of four will be pulling a 20-tonne ‘Toad’ brake wagon along the Buckfastleigh South Devon Railway track for charity tomorrow.
‘All Pool Together’ will be hotly contested by teams from Buckfastleigh Royal British Legion, including presently serving personnel; Buckfastleigh Youth Club veterans; Ivybridge Young Farmers; Devon and Cornwall Police; Gilpin Demolition, and many others.
The teams will pull the 20-tonne wagon 300 feet against the clock. Team sponsorship money will go to Buckfastleigh’s community pool.
Organiser Clair Stevens said: ‘This is our third year running such an event and it’s great fun and fiercely competitive.
‘The last two years were ‘all hands to the pump’ events with a pump cart. Unfortunately the cart went into the workshop for repairs and is too expensive to restore to safe working order. So we had to think of another hard physical challenge. I think the teams and spectators will really enjoy this 20-tonne wagon pull against the clock.
‘People will be able to see all the action from the platform at Buckfastleigh, and delicious hot and cold food and drink will be available at the station.’
The event starts at 10am and is expected to run until around 3pm, depending on the weather. There’ll also be a prize draw.
Clair added: ‘This year all the money raised via the draw will fund a pool party for Buckfastleigh’s youth club members in memory of Pauline Distin, who ran the youth club with her husband for more than 40 years.
‘Pauline, who’d helped at the previous “all hands to the pump” events, sadly passed away suddenly last year.’
