The All Whites made a return trip to the Recreation Ground, quietly confident of a repeat of their trip earlier in the season.

They did not disappoint the faithful supporters who had made the short journey down to Torquay.

The first half was rather dull, with each side defensively sound, the 3-3 scoreline at the break saying it all.

Joe Burford had put Newton ahead after five minutes, which was cancelled out by Matt Jackson for Torquay, who landed a kick from a good distance.

The game was a bit niggly at times but nothing more than you would expect for a local derby.

Torquay's Jon Arnold got a yellow card and spent ten minutes in the sin bin just after the break for dissent.

The All Whites made use of the extra man, Cane setting his threequarters free and a fine back line move was finished off in the corner by prop Paul Dowrick. Birkett missed the conversion, but he made amends minutes later when the All Whites were awarded a kickable penalty, taking the score to 11-3.

The All Whites pretty much dominated the remainder of the half, out-muscling the Torquay pack and pinning the Tics back into their own half.

Undoubtedly the boot of Birkett had a major impact. His line kicking was faultless and kept the All White pack on the front foot.

Frustration reared its head again in the Torquay ranks, flanker George Mills getting a yellow card for a high tackle near the end of the game.

The All Whites lost centre Joe Burford with a knee injury and then Ben Rowntree limped off with a damaged shoulder.

There is, however, strength in depth, particularly in the forwards. Paul Warren came on for Rowntree which saw Ian Milton moved back to number eight to make way for him. Mike Saxton made his first team debut for Burford, coming on at centre alongside man of the match Nick Holt, who once again showed his class and maturity throughout.

Coach Phil Burford was away, so forwards' coach Trevor Harris took control of the preparation, and he was pleased with the display which put the All Whites into the last eight of the Intermediate Cup.

Tomorrow sees the All Whites back in South West 2 West League action at near rivals Brixham, kick-off 2.30pm.
