The 21-year-old was found bleeding from the mouth in Bank Street at 2.15am.

Paramedics took him by ambulance to Torbay Hospital for treatment.

Subsequent inquiries revealed that the man had been involved in a disturbance during the last night of trading at the Market Gate pub.

Some 30 late-night drinkers were given their marching orders when police arrived to disperse the party just after 3am.

For the moment the Market Street pub is dark and dry after undergoing a substantial refurbishment. Hopes have been expressed that it might reopen under new management soon.
