ASHBURTON and Buckfastleigh residents are taking to the streets tonight to protest at Donald Trump and his ban on Muslims entering the US.

The protest is one of many happening around the UK in reaction to temporary legislation the new president put in place at the weekend. Many protests have taken place in the US and across the world over the weekend.

Cllr Andy Stokes, of Buckfastleigh Town Council, said: ‘It’s happening in response to the nationwide protests triggered by Trump banning Muslims from seven countries.

‘We believe Trump should be banned from the UK until he removes this legislation and other racist US legislation, including his plan to build a wall between the US and Mexico.

‘The UK has banned Muslims who’ve promoted terrorism and other people whose extremist policies have been seen to contravene our human rights legislation, but this ban on all Muslims is different.

‘I would suggest Trump’s recent policies would be in contravention to the Race Relations Act and the Equality Act and his enforcement of his views seen as an incitement to race hatred, so it seems reasonable to suggest we use such powers against him

‘It is also a symbolic act - to show him what not being welcome in a country would feel like. But most of all, all countries around the world have to be courageous enough to stick to ethical and moral principles and let him know that what he is doing is just not acceptable.’

The Ashburton protest starts at 6pm outside Church’s in North Street.
