ONE of Britain’s most rewarding civic celebrations was enjoyed by one and all in Ashburton over the weekend.

The town’s annual bread weighing and ale tasting event unfolded in all its restrained sobriety on Saturday.

Altogether 11 bakeries and watering holes played host to the roving players of the piece, devotedly followed by assorted hangers-on hoping for extra refreshment.

Ale tasters Charlie Dennis and Mike Lowry expressed themselves well pleased with the quality of libations set before them.

Bread weighers Lucy Dennis and Marianne Weymouth were similarly impressed with the doughy concoctions which came their way.

The fresh loaves were duly carried to the subsequent medieval fayre in St Lawrence Lane where they were auctioned off in aid of portreeve Tony Lewis’ charity, the town’s swimming pool.

Don Distin, chairman of the ale tasting committee, said afterwards: ‘It all went swimmingly. It was a fantastic day – and the weather was very good to us.’
