VOLUNTEERS running Ashburton’s popular swimming pool hope to improve facilities by erecting a timber-covered shelter for visitors.

Plans have been submitted to Dartmoor National Park for approval to build the structure which will provide shelter against the rain.

Architects van Ellen Sheryn point out there is currently no covered space within the pool complex at Love Lane.

In a statement to planners, they say: ‘There are a number of small single-storey buildings that constitute the swimming pool complex.

‘The two changing room blocks and the kitchen and cafe block are all poorly constructed, timber-framed and clad buildings with simple mono-pitched roofs.

‘There is currently no covered space within the complex and the new timber construction will offer pool visitors shelter from the rain and refuge from the sun.

‘It will also form a congregational point and focus to the disparate group of buildings.

‘This application seeks to provide this popular local swimming pool with an outdoor covered area.’

The application has been made by the owner Teignbridge Council but the pool is run by volunteers as a charity, supported by local businesses and fund raising.

A decision is expected in March.
