WITH visas running out, cycling duo Esther Amery and Leigh-Anne Crossley pedalled for the Cambodian border before time ran out.
Knowing the documents were due to expire the girls cycled 180km in a day – but luck was not on their side.
Esther’s front brakes failed to work due to the environment they were cycling in but managed to make it to their last checkpoint in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City.
Just as they thought their troubles were behind them, the bike specialists she went to see the following day said they would not be able to fix the bike as the parts were from an old model.
Luckily, the part was found and the pair were on their way again, but it was not long before the encountered another problem as they were heading for the Cambodian border.
Leigh-anne’s back tyre started to deflate, so the girls changed the inner tube. a couple kilometres later Leigh-Anne’s tyre burst.
A mechanic managed to help the girls fix the split inner tube before they hopped back on their seats and carried on cycling.
On a more positive note, Esther said: ‘At the end of our journey in Vietnam we have managed to clock up a total of 2,225km.
‘All of the drama over, we are pleased to say that we have successfully crossed the border into Cambodia, we are heading towards Phnom Penh, our first major checkpoint.’
One of highlights of Vietnam for the pals was when they were lucky enough to share the road with the country’s national cycling team.
