There were scenes of celebration on Friday as Newton Abbot Batmen retained the division one title in ruthless style, thrashing lowly Full of Beans, from Bishopsteignton, 10-0, writes Alan Maynard.

Needing just two points from the encounter, perhaps appropriately it was Dennis Gibbs who hit the winning shots against Pat Lyon to be crowned champions once again.

In true Batmen style, and with player averages to think about, Gibbs, Nick Halse and Tony Halse went on to complete a whitewash with only Pat Lyon close to spoiling the party, taking Halse to five, losing 11-6 in the final leg.

It was veteran Gibbs' 16th division one winner's medal and he was over the moon to be crowned champion once again.

'It's great to get a winner's medal and it will be nice to play our final match against Pengelly's Gulls as champions,' he said.

The champagne corks didn't stop popping there as, down in division three, Barnabas Sports Trust came home 7-3 victors over Brixham Swifts to win the title in only their second season in the league.

Ed Thompson and father-and-son combination Hugh and Roger Doxat-Pratt eased past Swifts' Dan Asker and Andrew Brierley to clinch the title ahead of rivals Hasbeens.

Only Michael Lu for Swifts was able to claim points for the Brixham side to make them safe from the wooden spoon and put Lu on top of the division three averages.

In division two, Dawlish Aces are one win away from claiming the top spot and promotion to division one as they thrashed Brixham Sharks 10-0.

Aces stuttered earlier in the week against Newton Abbot Academicals, losing the home fixture 6-4 in a match of firsts for both teams.

Steve Cooper and Ed Crawford suffered their first defeats at the hands of the ever-improving Chris Womack, while Jim McIvor lost his 100 per cent record in the division, both to Crawford and Dave Davies.

Aces' captain Ozzy Dee was pleased with his team's performance, but praised the efforts of Womack: 'The match could have gone either way, but I would say man of the match was the much-improved Chris Womack, who is going to be a formidable player.'

At the bottom of division one, the final bell tolled for Marldon as they crashed out of the top flight, losing both to Taverners and Halwell A in two hard fought matches which accumulated points to show a much improved last third to the season.

Now unable to catch seventh-placed Full of Beans, they bow out with one match to play.

In other matches, Brixham Gulls engineered a fine win against this season's runners-up Halwell A in division one.

Halwell B are still in the hunt for division two's runner-up spot with Newton Abbot Academicals, while Dawlish Diamonds and 21 Up are battling it out for division two status next season.

Two fantastic knockout competition quarter-finals saw Newton Abbot Academicals book themselves a semi-final meeting against Halwell A in the Challenge Cup, while Brixham Trawlers just held on against Tykes to set up a Brixham derby in the Dyment Shield semis.

Trawlers were 4-2 up and cruising before Tykes summoned enough strength to bring the match level at 4-4.

It was up to Steve Metcalfe and Pat Darch to complete the turnaround and, at 2-0 up in legs, they had one foot firmly in the semi, until Alan Maynard and Chris Baron knuckled down to take the match all the way to the final set and run out 11-3 winners.

In the Academicals' match, it was Barnabas Sports Trust who, at 4-3 up, found themselves on the verge of winning the tie before Doug Morgan levelled and player of the week Chris Womack gave Academicals the 5-4 win – 11-5 in the fourth – against Hugh Doxat-Pratt.
