A fight to halt the controversial demolition of Ashburton Police Station to replace it with a small supermarket and offices could today be won or lost at a meeting in Bovey Tracey.

The scheme has generated vocal opposition in the town but won support of officers at Dartmoor National Park Authority and Teignbridge Council.

Today members of the national park's development management committee will be asked to vote on the matter.

Dartmoor planning officers will argue that the police station, at 23 Eastern Road, can go once force operations have been moved to nearby Dolbeare Meadow.

Concerns about extra traffic and parking have been dismissed, with officers saying there was no evidence to suggest problems would result from the change.

They also doubted that a new store would hurt existing traders.
