GERALDINE GASKELL, of Newton Abbot writes:

I am shocked to learn that a landlord has applied to pull down a building and replace it with flats and shops, even though there is a tenant with a new lease using the premises. The building in question is none other than Argos, a business that has been there for years and appears to be doing well.

And then we have our beloved M & S closing down. WHY? Saving money was the answer but whatever the reason what will happen to the empty shop now?

What we need to do is encourage bigger names into town, the sort of businesses that are downsizing from the huge monster out-of-town retail outlets to a more manageable size such as the M & S store.

Newton Abbot is full of empty shops. We do not need more coming into town. By encouraging multi-nationals to downsize and take a high street store, not only cuts their overheads but gives us variety, and brings trade back into town.

What we need to do is make the big stores realise all the best things come in smaller packages.
