A SHOP in the heart of a Teignbridge village that closed several years ago could reopen if new proposals are approved.
The village store and former Post Office in Chudleigh Knighton has been shut for more than three years after the previous owner deemed it not viable to run such a large shop in a small village.
As such, a new proposal to re-open the store has been submitted to Teignbridge District Council.
The application - reference 25/01788/FUL - is seeking to retain and reopen the store, but on a much smaller scale, with on-site accommodation.
‘This is deemed to be the only way to make running such a shop in this small community viable’, the design and access statement for 25/01788/FUL says.
The application would turn part of the ground floor into a two-bedroom apartment, and while there is no on-site parking, arrangements have been made for the occupants to rent a space at the rear of the property from a neighbour, the Mid-Devon Advertiser understands.
‘This new venture would compliment the community and make the shop a go-to place for the residents to obtain their every-day essentials, especially the elderly or those unable to travel’, the design and access statement says.
‘This would also aid their well-being, & give a greater sense of community back to the village’, the statement adds.
Teignbridge District Council will decided on the application by January 6, 2026.
